Denizen of the Dump

In the future--100,000 years or so--the Earth is no longer worth saving. Human refuse has burst the banks of civilization and collected in vast dumps the size of Texas. Clouds of flies rise like thunderheads over the sea of sunbaked trash. Mountains of garbage glitter and pulse surreally as trillions of ants seep over them.

Amidst the apocalyptic decay, the small and quiet creatures survive and adapt. This earless lizard feeds primarily on fly larvae; although its food is abundant, it still has predatory crows, snakes, toxic vapor, rats, acid and ants to contend with. It has developed appropriate camouflage in response, and adapted its inborn burying instinct to the plastic substrate.

Its existence is a living testament to the tragedy of man's ascendancy.

Whoo. I actually began this piece about a year ago, but gave up after drawing those little bits of trash became too tedious. Since then I've worked on it a few minutes here and there, until today when I decided to buckle down and finish the thing.

My next submission will be prettier, I promise .
