A Martian Rat makes one of its rare forays into the superterranean world almost a billion years in the future. Descended from something human colonists left eons ago, these creatures now make their living in eusocial colonies beneath the martian soil. A colony begins when a tiny windborne queen mates with a similarly tiny male before burrowing into the ground. Here she gives birth to the first generation. The members of this elite group differentiate into workers and soldiers and then go about reproducing themselves, the epigenetic traits of the castes carrying over to their offspring. These then radiate out across the martian steppe hunting for the tuberous stems of the window plant, which grows completely underground and exposes its tissues to the sun through small skylights. In time, the queen will release millions of tiny males and females into the air to begin new colonies elsewhere.

These creatures are typical of most life on Mars in their fossorial habit, for the planet is colder and emptier than it was when the humans still lived there. Most life has retreated underground to delay what seems to be the inevitable, yet there's still some hope. The deepest of the Rats' tunnels are the breeding grounds for weird lithotrophic bacteria; could these release Mars' untapped carbon and rejuvenate the planet? Time will tell.

I'm not totally happy with this description, but I'll work on it later.

Forgive me anyone who knows about geology if Mars doesn't really have vast untapped stores of carbon. I just liked the idea :) .
